Lengthy, Lengthy Track Commentary

1. Prelude, the Final Fantasy series (Nobuo Uematsu)

IS NOW..................................Theme of Chekov and Sulu Being Rebooted for Better or Worse Because of Shifts in the Space-Time Continuum? I don't know, all Squaresoft fanmixes require this song and this version (from FF7) sounded the most like the two of them, like, incubating into their new future selves somewhere in the cosmos? Sure, that sounds good.

2. Tutorial, Final Fantasy Tactics (Masaharu Iwata and Hitoshi Sakimoto)

IS NOW..................................THEME OF STARFLEET ACADEMY!

"If you know, you can foresee."
-Professor Daravon, FFT

Study hard, you guys! And maybe have mutually-unrequited longing UST with each other? I don't mind either way!

3. Lunar Whale, Final Fantasy IV (Nobuo Uematsu)

IS NOW..................................Theme of Liftoff! I still listen to this song every fucking time I take off in an airplane. Gettin' the story started in style.

4. Zidane's Theme, Final Fantasy IX (Nobuo Uematsu)

IS NOW..................................Chekov's Theme! Adorable and impish. All he's missing is a tail, really.

5. Frog's Theme, Chrono Trigger (Yasunori Mitsuda) and
6. Cid's Theme, Final Fantasy VII (Nobuo Uematsu)

ARE NOW..................................Sulu's Theme. I couldn't choose, so you get both. Don't let his name fool you: Frog is the most noble, legendary, stalwart (;___;) knight in RPG history and a complete badass to boot. His theme of swordwielding honor brings tears to the eyes of gruff 1980's-born men everywhere. And Cid VII's song, of course, is that of the quintessential pilot (who is also a badass).

7. Cute Little Tozas, Final Fantasy III (Nobuo Uematsu)
"Have You Ever Seen Me?" vocal arrangement from "Final Fantasy: Love Will Grow," sung by Ikuko Noguchi

IS NOW..................................THEME OF ADORABLE AWAY-MISSION (SEXUAL) HIJINKS!:

Here deep in the forest forgive and forget
See, everything is new here
Deep in the forest, forget
'Bout trifles hurting you!

Why don't you let it go away?
(Shall we sing? Shall we sing?
No one's watching!)
Why don't you altogether stay?
(In the forest you can have a lot of... fun!)

Okay so basically.
(1) This is probably the cutest melody Square has to offer and I'm sorry, Chekov and Sulu are fucking cute.
(2) The lyrics are so incredibly sexually suggestive, I mean really.
(3) The Engrish makes it sound like they're saying "Deep in the forest, fucking." So. Yeah.

8. Gau, Final Fantasy VI (Nobuo Uematsu)
Arranged and performed by McVaffe

IS NOW..................................Theme of Sad Tenderness. As a counterpart to the above, because Chekov/Sulu runs the emotional gamut.

"Eyes shining with intelligence, a youth surviving against all odds..."
-Description of Gau, FF6

9. Flight, Xenogears (Yasunori Mitsuda)

IS NOW..................................THEME OF CHEKOV AND SULU TOGETHER AT THE HELM. YEAH YOU HEARD ME.

10. Spring Lullaby, Xenogears Creid (Yasunori Mitsuda)
Arrangement of "Flight," Xenogears

IS NOW..................................Theme of Chekov and Sulu together in love. :`| (HEY HAVEN'T I HEARD THIS MELODY SOMEWHERE BEFORE?):

Hi wo abite kirameku kusa no mi
Senobi wo shite
Hibi wareta daichi wo kondo ha
Daite ageru

(So soak in the sun
And grow until there's nothing left
That you can't dream or do
And if you should find
This weighty world too much to bear
I'll carry it for you)

I almost named this fanmix "Spring Lullaby" but it didn't sound as good.

11. Dream of the Shore, Chrono Cross (Yasunori Mitsuda)

IS NOW..................................Theme of Reassignment. It's, it's not going to happen in reboot, you guys, don't worry, it's just a bad dream ;A; (fucking Reliant)

12. The Layers of Harmony, Final Fantasy IX (Nobuo Uematsu)
Alternate version of "Melodies of Life," co-written and sung by Emiko Shiratori

IS NOW..................................Theme of Trite Theme of Post-Reassignment Hope:

In my dearest memories, I see you reaching out to me.
Though you're gone, I still believe that you can call out my name.

13. Hikari, Kingdom Hearts (Yoko Shimomura)
Performed by Kaoru Wada and the New Japan Philharmonic

IS NOW..................................Theme of Chulu-Love Fucking Conquering All, TAKE THAT REASSIGNMENT YEEEEEAH. Some may remember (??) that I used the regular pop-vocal "Hikari" in my other fanmix from a million years ago, but this is the suitably triumphant orchestral arrangement. And yes, "Hikari" is the same word as "Hikaru" -- 光. The meaning is "light."

14. Pure Heart, Final Fantasy VII (Nobuo Uematsu)
Vocal Arrangement of "Aeris's Theme" from the album "Final Fantasy X Original Sound Version"

IS NOW..................................Theme of Chekov/Sulu Together 4-Eva.

Nagaku tsuzuku kono michi no mukou ni
Shinjirareru mono ga kitto aru

(Walking through worlds anew
On this endless road laid out before me,
I have with me
Something true.
Till the end,
My something is you.)

Eeeeeee I got a bonus track! Thank you!! I love this so hard. SO HARD. Whiny male voices ftw.

lol I hated CC with the heat of a thousand suns but the soundtrack was probably one of the best in RPG history, which drives me crazy. It's pretty much all I remember of the game at this point, is the music, I think because my brain blocked the rest out.

LOL. Oh God. That is literally the only game I've ever played where I didn't realize I was at the final battle. I was going along and going along and... oh look. Credits are rolling. *long silence* WHAT??? Of course that was just one in a long line of similar moments during that game. CC was also the only game where I reached a point that I literally had no idea what the hell I was supposed to be doing next. I don't mean like in most video games where it's like "I know I'm going to that castle, but I don't know how to get into it." I mean, "I don't have the slightest damn clue what my main hero's goal is or what the hell he's trying to accomplish right now."

FF6 is actually kind of a dark steampunk game and its angsty music doesn't really go with the (mostly-)lighthearted and innocent futuristic world of Chulu. :{

Word. I mean "Searching for Friends" is one of the most amazing pieces of "flying" music ever, but also... yeah, angsty.

Chrono Cross was literally impossible to play without a FAQ. Or impossible to complete, anyway. For instance:

I didn't realize I was at the final battle. I was going along and going along and... oh look. Credits are rolling. *long silence* WHAT???

This is because, and I shit you not, you got the BAD ENDING. lol. You are actually NOT SUPPOSED to beat the final boss (who was extremely lame if you will recall, a fusion of a Lavos Spawn and that bastardized excuse for a Schala clone with the cockney accent). Anyway, no, you are not supposed to actually beat it up until it dies, you are supposed to coordinate the color forcefield of all the magic in the battle into a certain pattern so it makes a certain tune and ~frees Kid/Schala from her Spawny prison~.

I wish I were making this up.

I mean "Searching for Friends" is one of the most amazing pieces of "flying" music ever

Totally agreed, and it's in large part how it's introduced, flying up from Daryl's Tomb with the water splashing all around and birds trailing behind and.... god I fucking love that game

It's taken me a while to respond to this because now I'm all freshly enraged at Chrono Cross. Freshly. I forgot how much I hated that stupid battlefield color system. WHERE ARE MY TRIPLE TECHS

Totally agreed, and it's in large part how it's introduced, flying up from Daryl's Tomb with the water splashing all around and birds trailing behind

Ngl. I cried when that happened.

Right? Especially because there are absolutely no, that is ZERO, hints in the game that this is what you are supposed to do in the final battle. None.

Like I said, it was a game that literally required a FAQ to play and beat properly, and that's lame as hell.

lol my friend and I were trying to name as many of the 50+ lameass characters in CC that we could, just the other day, and I think I managed like, seven. It's a fun game to play on a long road trip! Epithets are allowed! (e.g. the fat mom, the strawman thing, the fairy, the dude in the red speedo)

TERRIBLE GAME
